Material For Eyeglasses-Nickel Silver and Nickel

Nickel silver is first known in China, and was known in the west from imported wares called “paktong” (白銅) , it is named for its silvery appearance, but contains no elemental silver.
If your metal frames caused a reaction, nickel is usually the culprit because most metal frames are made of a nickel alloy. Other metals used include aluminum, stainless steel, titanium, zinc, copper, beryllium, gold and silver. Stainless steel, titanium, gold and silver are usually hypoallergenic.

Nickel Silver Frame – Alloy of copper, nickel, and zinc. Many varieties according to the percentage of each element in its composition, but the usual formulation is (60% / 20% / 20% )Copper / Nickel / Zinc. Most of the frames in the market made of this kind of metal. Nickel silver is able to be enameled with various colors. This frame can be decorated with epoxy wire on the eye rim. The life time of nickel silver is not very long since it can be affected by the wearer’s sweat. It has been said that nickel can cause skin cancer, so it might be good to avoid this kind of frame, especially for one who has sensitive skin.

80% of metal eyeglasses use all or part of this material. Silver nickel is economical and easy to manufacture with a high precision, since it is hard. Its drawback is its high nickel content, which requires a protection layer. It is often associated with monel, which is used to make the front part of the frame.

• It is frequently used to make machined elements (pivot pins, tenons, rims…) or matrixed elements (temples, bridges, endpieces).

Pros : Extremely durable and flexible. Endless color and design options. Easy to warp and polish, can be used for thick parts.

Cons : Less resistant than monel. Heavy, corrosive, allergic reaction is possible.

Material For Eyeglasses - Titanium

Titanium

Titanium is a silver-gray metal – Many frame manufacturers offer titanium and beta-titanium material styles these days; the life time will be very long because titanium is rust free, lightweight, durable, strong and does not corrode when exposed to salty sweat, thus highly recommended in acid atmospheres. Titanium is widely used for everything from the Gemini and Apollo space capsules to medical implants such as heart valves, so the price is quite expensive. The highlight benefit of titanium as a frame is its allergy free (bio-compatible) characteristic. It is also 48 % lighter than alloys, except for aluminum, so we can say that titanium is the best frame raw material at this moment.

Titanium is expensive and hard to warp. Thus, there are alloys made of aluminum, vanadium, commercially designated as "Beta-titanium", for instance.

Titanium eyewear can be produced in a variety of colors for a clean, modern look with a hint of color. And they're hypoallergenic.

Some titanium frames are made from an alloy that is a combination of titanium and other metals, such as nickel or copper. In general, titanium alloy frames cost less than 100% titanium frames and might caused allergy.

Pros : excellent resistance to corrosion, hypoallergenic, light, heat resistant, sturdy.

Cons : cannot be repaired. Hard to warp and polish, limited color selection.

Why Does Wearing Glasses Cause Skin Allergy

Some people suffer from the tickle and exanthema of skin after wearing eyeglasses. On one hand, it may be caused by the sensitive skin; On the other hand, it may relate to the substance used in the producing process of frame.

For example, the nickel in the metallic frame or some chemical substances in the plastic frame may dissolve in the chloride ion of your sweat, which will interact with immune cells after entering your blood. Thus, skin allergy happens. This situation easily happens in summer when we sweat a lot for the hot weather.

Nickel can be used as a material to make the frames of our glasses. Even if the frame is coated with other materials outside, nickel can also come out of these materials and contact your skin directly. If the people who have sensitive skin wear such kind of glasses, part of their skin will be infected.
People have found a kind of metallic material recently, which is called titanium and will not cause skin allergy. Titanium is gradually applied in making frame. However, people still cannot avoid skin allergy the frame should be coated with other substance in the producing process.

Some small manufacturers never consider the consumers’ benefits when coating frames of eyewear. They coat the frame with stimulating nickel or copper that is corrosive easily. What is worse, they even cheat customs with alloys containing little titanium or other substance instead of using the real titanium for reducing their cost. These frames may cause skin allergy easily. Some of them even form a patina or lost their paint after a period of using.

Actually, frames should go through a series of tests before they are on sale. Specialized institution tests their corrosion and abrasion resistance by random inspection. Part of frames below standard are stopped from flowing into the market. However, many manufacturers sell their unqualified production by cheating customers in various ways.

We should not judge a frame’s quality by its price when we buy it. We consider its effect and pay attention to the certificate offered by the eyeglasses store. We had better go to a reputable store who can guarantee the quality of their products in order to buy glasses better qualified.

Maintenance of Eyeglasses

Eyeglasses are modern people’s representatives, which can not only help to correct vision, but also improve people’s outlook. Nowadays, more and more people would like to put on glasses. Therefore, a suitable choice of them is of great importance. However, we cannot overlook their scientific maintenance. Here are some tips for your reference.

1. To maintain the cleanliness of lens and frame. In the rubbing of glasses, it is best to hold the bridge of frame nose with one hand, and to gently wipe the lens with the other hand. If there is anything dirty that is not easy to clean on it, you can wash with water first and then clean with a soft cloth, but at the same time avoid scratching indiscriminately with hard objects, so that the lens will extend its service life.

2. While taking off eyeglasses, you must hold with both hands, so as to avoid deformation.

3. The metal frame glasses, in order to prevent premature corrosion and fading, cannot get to acid, alkali and corrosive gases. Generally speaking, the body’s sweat has a certain degree of corrosion, so frames must be prohibited from staining with it; at the same time, when you are in the shower, on sauna, eyeglasses should be properly safeguarded to prevent water vapor or any corrosion caused by water.

4. Plastic frame glasses should avoid getting into contact with organic solvents and escape from high temperature or fire sources.

5. After taking off glasses, you should place them in boxes; their convex lenses must not contact with the desk, in order to avoid abrasion damage. Besides, you should take them to specialties to have a regular adjustment.

6. Eyeglasses should not be placed under direct sunlight; otherwise, they will turn to deformation and fading. Meanwhile, if there are sand, dust, and oil on lenses, you should clean with neutral detergents first and then rinse, wash etc.

7. Don’t misplace glasses. Some people get used to placing eyeglasses on desks or seats when they don’t need to wear them. However, it is very harmful. The high temperature will bake glasses; for example, plastic frames are easier to be distorted while under strong lights, so you must put them in specific places.

8. You should pay attention to the beauty products such as cosmetics or cosmetic agents with chemical constituents which may easily lead to deformation and fading of frames. So you must rub them clean with special cloth or paper.
After you know well of the maintenance of eyeglasses, try visionsking.com right away. Excellent quality, reasonable price, unique design and considerate service are provided for you. More importantly, professional suggestion and detailed information about glasses are also available there.
